The Italian artist Morcky has been living and working in Amsterdam for over ten years. His first involvement in graffiti and street art has evolved into a passion for drawings, on the one hand, and videos on the other. Recently he gave way to the drawing and created InsideOut: A Galactic Adventure (published through crowdfunding).

InsideOut is a beautifully drawn graphic novel that combines Morcky’s two passions: drawing and video making. The seven chapters of Insideout each tell the story of different characters lost in their own explorative journey through the galaxies. Initially untied to each other, they meet up in a void and timeless dimension, where everything seems harmoniously merged. All the while the ‘Heli-cat’ will be your trusted guide.

“The journey is the leitmotif of the novel. It’s a metaphor of the subjective interpretation of the world through experience and the way it turns into reality. Imagination plays a central role in this ‘InsideOut’ trip, taking the form, from time to time, of its characters. Three kids – one little girl and two boys – are the protagonists. They act out of instinct and tend to merge their dream state with reality. Their journey has a playful and bittersweet taste, and is experienced as an imaginary discovery. The explorer, on the contrary, is a wise mythical creature in search of the truth. His pragmatic imagination always leads him in the ‘right’ direction. Another figure of importance is the gentle giant, a mix of childish innocence and mature control. He never acts with a hidden agenda and represents a bridge between the kids and the adults.”

Click here to view the embedded video.

While we have always been a fan of Morcky’s free hand style, fluid lines and detailed creations, InsideOut seems to tie it all together. The characters feel like old friends. Abandoned landscapes and surreal ambiances come alive. Post-human androids and imperfect abstract entities are drawn sketchy and yet accurate, showing the constant paradox between perfection and failure, while highlighting the beauty and strength of human fragility. While the drawings in his graphic novel don’t need explaining, they work on a subconscious level, taking you on a journey that is very hard to put into words.

Recently we have been writing a lot about COMMA Art City in Perugia, Italy. COMMA is -I hate to say it- a very cool urban art event in a dreamy little town in Umbria, curated by TwoThings, a.k.a. Morcky and The Boghe, a.k.a. Marco Galmacci and Rocco Pezzella, a.k.a. NNE members from the very beginning.

During a nice dinner, a glass of whine and some distraction I interviewed one of TwoThings, Morcky Troubles, about his childhood in Perugia and his recent return to the city of stairs.

How was it to grow up in Perugia?
Perugia is a long way from everything. It almost seems surreal, because it is so secluded from the world. When you grow up here it is hard to be in touch with what is happening outside. So you only ever hear about what is going on, but you rarely see it.

Why did you move away?
It was a very natural decision to move somewhere else. I was searching for freedom and youth culture and couldn’t get it from my surroundings here. Emigrating seemed a good way to leave Perugia behind. Italy, and especially Perugia, are somehow stuck in the past. It is a strong culture that doesn’t relate to anything real anymore.
Rocco and I heard a lot of good stories about the artistic life in Amsterdam, so we decided to move there.

What is typical Perugian for you?
The most typical, or traditional, would be the torta al testo.

What about the people?
The people here are quite closed and not expansive at all. You got to understand that Perugia is quite difficult to reach, which is why the old traditions are still left intact. Transport and communication have only been improved in the last fifty years or so and you can see that a lot of people are a bit scared from what comes from outside.

How did the idea for COMMA come about?
Our friend Piercarlo opened a cultural space not too long ago and approached Rocco and me as TwoThings to do an exhibition there. Our idea was to bring our life in Amsterdam to Perugia -to make a connection between the two realities we live in- so we convinced him to make it bigger than the initial idea. Since Piercarlo also works with the city council it just came down to setting a date and organizing it.

Tell me more about the selection of artists you invited.
The selection came very naturally. The artists invited are our friends based in Amsterdam and, as I said before, we wanted our two lifes to come together; to clash. We wanted to bring artists that we look up to artistically and that we, at the end of the day, like to have around.

From what I understand talking to you and others from Perugia, it is quite difficult here for young people in the sense that there is little to do. Yet, I see a lot of young people and students everywhere. Why is that?
Perugia is a student city, but they only study and leave. Few people stay to build and create a life here. Things here are institutionalized to stay the way they are, which makes it difficult to stay and fight for change.

What was the best part of this experience for you?
I loved doing the mural at central station. Down there, at the bottom of the mountain, is a disastrous part of Perugia with a lot of junkies and poverty. I hope to somehow change the perception of the city and to make an impact on such a critical area.

What do you hope to give to the people of Perugia?
I want to give something to the new generation and to inspire the youngsters. I hope to make them believe in their future and that they should just keep doing what they like and work to make a living from it. Most of all, I hope to to inspire them to do things differently.

Now, I’ve heard rumors about plans for the coming years?!
Yeah, we got great responses from the city council and the organizers. We already have a meeting this week to discuss future events. Next year we want to take it to another level and create interaction with the more traditional crafts of Perugia, by organizing collaborations between artists and artisans.

Anna, aka Ovni, and Marco, aka Morcky, just recently returned from their little galactic adventure at the Galo Art gallery in Turin. They had worked hard for about a week to produce all of the paintings together on location.

When I met Anna the other day she told me that working together was not as easy as she thought. Even though the two of them -as people as well as their styles- match and merge naturally it wasn’t always easy to combine Marco’s figurative fantasies with Anna’s abstract impressions. The outcome is none the less a perfect match made in distant galaxies with a bit of star dust.

See here the video with a short interview of the exhibition.

The exhibition is still on until January 12.

Tomorrow, December 9 at 5 p.m. is the opening of Ovni’s and Morcky’s show at the Galo Art gallery in Turin. Here is a special sneak peek of what Anna and Marco have been up to in preparation of the show. If you’re in Italy you should try to make it, because those two are a natural combination. A combination that doesn’t overwhelm you with excess at first sight. A combination that takes a good look at you, takes a sniff and then comes closer to open up it’s beauty.

Anna Taratiel, aka Ovni, has been working on her visual ‘mental landscapes’ for the last years. She developed work in the fields of painting, muralism, illustration and installation. Her work has a very graphical feel to it, frequently displaying seemingly endless and abstract compositions that work as a visual stimulus of soft color tones and strong black lines. Her personal experiences develop their own dynamics; they become energy, movement, forms and colors. The organic and the static, the two poles which make up our life, flow into Ovni´s work.

Marco Galmacci, aka Morcky, is an Italian born artist that lives in Amsterdam since 2002, where he works on various projects, the most important being his art and TwoThings (Studio). His main focuses are illustration, wall painting and videos. His work gives special attention to composition, perspective and dynamics. A wide use of black and white characterizes an important part of his whole production. Thin fragile lines are often countered with heavy dark areas, creating a narrative that is driven by visual connections.

Both artists have a roughness in their style that I admired since I first met the art behind the person. The simple, but quirky lines seem to come straight from the heart. They are organic and delicate as much as they are raw and dare to be unfinished. Despite all the roughness they convey details that will only open up when you take the time to really look at them. Their styles make a perfect match in my opinion. The biggest difference? Anna is abstract and Marco is figurative.

Anna (SP), aka Ovni, aka Taratiel, and Marco (IT), aka Morcky, aka Galman, are a quiet duo. A combination that doesn’t overwhelm you with excess at first sight. A combination that takes a good look at you, takes a sniff and then comes closer to open up it’s beauty.

Next weekend Anna and Marco will travel to the Galo Art Gallery to create their first duo-show together: Adventuras Galacticas (in Spanish) or Peripezie Galattiche (in Italian). Something that has been coming a long time. Galo on the other hand is playing his cards well and landing one awesome show after the other.
