Recently, I headed south for my 3 person show and first exhibition of 2011, “Exuberance Found” at Distinction Gallery with San Diego’s own Mike Maxwell and Chris B. Murray who came out from Philly. After a lot of work and quite a journey lugging down some large pieces and my beast of an install, “Right & Left”, I quickly got to painting some walls with Mike, swilling down the local beer and enjoying being warm in San Diego.
Distinction Gallery itself is a beautiful space with 14 independent artist studio spaces throughout the back and second story and an amazing collection throughout their halls. They also have the ArtHatch program, which is a studio and education center for teens needing to create. The owners/curators Melissa and Sam are friendly folks who are great at what they do and steadily bring to Escondido.
Additionally, Mike Maxwell has his “Live Free” podcast you should check out
here. He’s got some great past interviews with artists such as Kelsey Brooks and Sergio Hernandez talking about an array of issues from Free Masonry, to hallucinogens, to Miley Cyrus. I spent an hour at his place drawing and shooting the art shit while recording a show that’ll be out sometime soon.
I had lived in San Diego for 3 years after school so it was great to see friendly faces and family. But, speaking of family, I’ve been on the lam with my (new) family for a month now and as much as I love being a traveling band of gypsy couch surfers, I’m really looking forward to getting home and receiving a welcoming hug from the San Francisco fog.
